Description
Summary:In his epistle of Rerum familiarum libri IV, 1, Petrarca narrates his ascension to Mount Ventoso. He describes various natural elements (such as the mountain, the earth, the sea) and when he reaches te summit he alludes to «nubes erant sub pedibus». The landscape and his itinerary have an allegorical meaning. Two 16th century poems, Francisco de Aldana’s Carta para Arias Montano sobre la contemplación de Dios y los requisitos della, and Fernando de Herrera’s Elegía VI (1582), are reminiscent of this epistle. Both compositions describe the mountain, the earth and the sea, as well as clouds contemplated from above. Moreover, both combine real and allegorial landscapes.
