| description | Houphouëtism is a neologism linked to the person and work of President Houphouët-Boigny. As a doctrine, its origins can be traced back to 1985. For the development of his country and the well-being of its population, Houphouët made large concessions to foreigners regarding land ownership. This leads to a massive influx of foreign fishermen into Aïzi, resulting in an increase in the population. The objective of this article is to explain the Houphouëtian foundations of this strong demographic growth. Its interest is that it reveals the serious, sometimes bloodless conflicts born from the "forced" cohabitation between the Aïzi natives and their numerous hosts, foreign fishermen. Our methodology consists of analyzing Houphouëtian land and property legislation, dependent on colonial legislation. We also rely on Houphouët's political thought and on official demographic statistical data from Côte d'Ivoire. From our analyses, it appears that in the precolonial era, the Aïzi lived in small towns forming a chain on the western edge of the Ébrié lagoon. But the state and land management initiated during the colonial era in 1950 and continued at independence by President Houphouët, favors a massive influx of foreign fishermen into their area. Unfortunately, this strong presence has a negative impact on the fishing activities of the Aïzi indigenous people; hence numerous intercommunity conflicts. |
