| Summary: | The opposition to the Vietnam War is not an isolated phenomenon of America or Europe. In fact, during a decade, this war embodies the symbol of the anti-imperialism resistance by the peoples of the third world. In Chile, the politically committed youth supports the Vietnamese people. They consider the battle against the American invader to be heroic and an example of the warfare towards the right of self-determination. The artists, and musicians in particular, express their opposition to war through artistic works: the canción is then established as the favored vehicle for delivering the political message. This paper is structured into two sections. It first describes the process of the protest, emphasizing the articulation between the political context and the artistic creation during a key period of Chile’s history. Later, it examines the different forms of the politically committed music of that time to establish a typology. |
