Summary:In the paper we first considered the issues of the role and importance of legal support in the field of hy- drological and hydrographical research. Proposed allocation of two periods: the post-war establishment of the legal support hydrological studies (1945-1970) aimed at intensification of development of surface water and the period of introduction of the system approach in legal support (1974-1990), triggering an active develop- ment and regulation of the scientific activity in the direction of protection and rational water use.
