Description
Summary:This article traces the different phases of the public memory of the Resistance in Italy from its elaboration and establishment as the hegemonic memory legitimising of the new democratic Republic at the end of the Second World War to the crisis of the anti-fascist paradigm in the 1980s. It then focuses on the radical change in the structure of public memory brought about by the collapse of the ‘First Republic’ in the early 1990s with the rise of a composite right wing (Northern League, Forza Italia, Italian Social Movement-National Alliance) under the aegis of Silvio Berlusconi. The legitimisation of the new power structure involves a ‘war of memory’ that challenges the Resistance and anti-fascism in the name of a reconciled memory rooted in neo-patriotism and anti-totalitarianism. The last part of the article examines the reactions of the anti-fascist political-cultural milieu between antagonistic mobilisation, dialogue and compromise with the right in the name of shared memory. Particular attention is given to the role played by the Presidents of the Republic (Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, Giorgio Napolitano, Sergio Mattarella) and to the significance of the new civil calendar, starting with the introduction in 2000 of Holocaust Remembrance Day.
