Description
Summary:This contribution concerns various examples of settlements of conflicts in the court of high justice at Elbeuf at the end of the fifteenth century. We explore them for the way in which the written word conveys the agreement reached between the two parties. A verdict, which to us seems to be one against a guilty party, is sometimes followed by financial arrangements which wholly deny that first impression. We might therefore enviseage an official version, often the only one reported, as a first important stage in the search for peace, which does not always allow for the truth to emerge. Are the juridical written records, as they appear to us, an intrinsic part of the judgement rather than a statement of the judgement?
