| Summary: | At the end of the second part of L’Éducation sentimentale, when describing Frédéric and Rosanette’s evening, which ends in Rue Tronchet, "in the home prepared for the other one" ("dans le logement préparé pour l’autre"), the author also paints a picture of Paris on the evening of February 24th, 1848, a date that would change the course of the revolution. In this page, Flaubert focuses on the story of the two lovers, but a closer reading allows to examine how the author intensely connects history and sentiment: he does so through a series of random events, but also through several instances of analogy, both varied and progressive. They give this private drama a sense of historical meaning and also a broader scope through echoes and repetitions, thus disseminating it throughout the text. |
