Changes in the minimum and maximum temperatures in Slovenia over the last 50 years

Long term monthly temperature data from four stations Kočevje, Ljubljana, Maribor and Rateče-Planica in Slovenia have been analysed. First trend analysis was performed on the years 1951 to 2000 annual and seasonal mean maximum and minimum temperature and diurnal temperature range (DTR) and secondly...

description Long term monthly temperature data from four stations Kočevje, Ljubljana, Maribor and Rateče-Planica in Slovenia have been analysed. First trend analysis was performed on the years 1951 to 2000 annual and seasonal mean maximum and minimum temperature and diurnal temperature range (DTR) and secondly on last 30 years (1971 to 2000). Increasing trends of approximately 0.9°C/50 years in the annual mean temperatures were found at all stations. During the last 50 years an increase in annual mean maximum and mean minimum temperature has occurred also. In general the minimum daily temperatures have increased at a larger rate than the maximum daily temperatures, resulting in a slight decrease in the long-term diurnal temperature range. These results are consistent with trends over much of the global landmass. But in the last 30 years at all stations the increase in mean maximum was faster than in the mean minimum, resulting in an increase in mean diurnal temperature range except for autumn months. Whether DTR is increasing or decreasing depends very much upon the choice of time series under investigation so careful interpretation of trend is essential in the case of climate change detection.
