Description
Summary:This article analyses a demonstration tape used in training at the Institute for Emotionally Focused Therapy, with the aim of identifying the processes that guide therapists’ responses and interventions. Using the metaphor of the Babushka doll, the article will illustrate four strands which guide Emotionally Focused Therapy: (i) a person-centred focus; (ii) the shaping of a positive self-relationship through uncovering the client’s emotion schemes; (iii) exploration of inner conflict; and (iv)inviting self response-ability. By the end of the article, the reader will be able to see how the language of the therapist that adheres to the above four layers has helped to unravel the client’s situation thereby allowing the therapist to identify an appropriate intervention.
