description This paper will explore the way systems of beliefs support actions and are mobilized in order to justify them. Relying on the distinction between factual-type beliefs and representational-type ones, the article exploits a study analysing the interventions of trainers and teachers specialized in gymnastics so that their pupils can learn from them. The results show that in this context of transmission, the metaphorical processes are good candidates to ensure the cognitive mediation between the perceptual and representational levels of their activity. The metaphor of the ‘reference-point’ is thus more particularly discussed to account for its capacity to provide the teacher with both a gymnic learning intelligibility and a source of regulations to be addressed to the pupils.
