description The article examines the use of culturally marked proper names, or onyms, in poetry and the problems of their translation. Proper names in fiction can perform multiple functions: they nominate objects, create artistic images, reflect the author’s intent, and create an appropriate atmosphere. In addition, the very form of these onyms speaks volumes about the object’s background; therefore, proper names are the leading means of creating cultural and historical colour, because literary texts are always written within a certain culture. The relevance of this research is determined by the fact that translation of poetry plays a significant role in the formation of national culture, since cross-cultural interaction takes place largely due to translations. The objective of the study is a linguostylistic analysis of proper names as cultural markers in a poetic text, as well as a comparative analysis of the original and translated text in order to identify the ways of their translation. The research is based on comparing the original and translated texts; a detailed analysis of culturally marked proper names, their functional and stylistic characteristics and the problems of their translation was carried out. The article describes various techniques for transferring Russian proper names into English, including transcription, transliteration, and approximate translation. Particular attention is paid to the problem of preserving the cultural potential of proper names in translation, as well as allusive names that can carry certain folklore, literary and phraseological reminiscences. The conducted research made it possible to identify the main problems that the translator faces when conveying the cultural potential of proper names, and to draw some conclusions regarding the most optimal methods of presenting culturally marked onyms in the target language.
