| Summary: |
This study investigates the role of PAI teachers in fostering religious tolerance among students at SMP Negeri 1 Way Panji, South Lampung, a school with a diverse religious background despite a Muslim-majority population. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews and documentation involving PAI teachers, students, and other religious education instructors. The findings indicate that PAI teachers play three essential roles: (1) as educators, by modeling inclusive behavior and teaching correct theological understanding; (2) as motivators, by encouraging students to engage in respectful interfaith interactions; and (3) as facilitators, by providing guidance when students face challenges related to religious differences. The study also identifies several supporting factors, including strong collaboration between teachers and parents, proactive leadership from the school principal, and teamwork among subject teachers. In contrast, external influences such as unsupportive social environments and exposure to inappropriate media content were found to hinder efforts to promote tolerance. The study concludes that the cultivation of religious tolerance requires a holistic and collaborative approach involving school stakeholders, educators, and families to shape students’ character in line with pluralistic and democratic values.
