description   Indonesia is a country marked by unparalleled diversity in ethnicity, culture, language, and religion—something scarcely matched anywhere else in the world. This diversity has been documented by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) in 2010. One form of diversity that frequently emerges is religious diversity, which necessitates the application of religious values as an effort to strengthen religious moderation. This study discusses one of the communities affiliated with Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) that seeks to address this issue. The research questions are: What are the ASWAJA NU character values? How are these values conveyed within the Central NU Backpacker community? What strategies are used for the internalization of these values in the community? The purpose of this study is to explore how the character values of ASWAJA can serve as a means of reinforcing religious moderation within the Central NU Backpacker Community. This research adopts a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. The research informants are members of the Central NU Backpacker leadership. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out by identifying and categorizing the data, presenting it, and drawing conclusions. The findings show that four core ASWAJA NU character values are internalized by the Central NU Backpacker community: Tawasuth (moderation), Tasamuh (tolerance), Tawazun (balance), and Amar ma’ruf nahi munkar (enjoining good and forbidding wrong). The Central NU Backpacker community demonstrates its commitment to the principles of religious moderation through activities such as group travel (Dolan), pilgrimage (Ziarah), visits to scholars (Sowan), and discussions. The community maintains a balance between cultural experiences and religious obligations, interacts with others in a spirit of tolerance, avoids extremist behavior, and seeks guidance from scholars during their journeys. Their commitment is also reflected in environmental care, social activities, community gatherings, and maintaining strong social bonds—all of which align with the principles of religious moderation and accommodate local values.
