Description
Summary:Although for a long time the epidemics of the past were studied only by historians, over the last two decades they have been of increasing interest to the broad range of archaeological sciences. However, although many mass graves are now being excavated, few studies set out to characterise the peculiarities of the management of the cadavers during epidemics. Besides, most of these studies suffer from the heterogeneity of chronological contexts and infectious agents taken into account. In order to contribute to this research, we have undertaken a comparative study between several French burial sites that contain graves related to the first Medieval plague epidemic, known as the “Black Death” (1347-1352 CE). The data obtained fuel a discussion of the variability of sepulchral expressions in times of plague and highlight a number of differences between rural and urban contexts. Lastly, a comparison with the results from a study of more recent burial sites with similar death rates leads to some remarks about the evolution of funerary customs during epidemics in the late Middle Ages and the modern period.
