Spatial and Temporal Variation Analysis of Wave in the Southeast Pacific Ocean Over the Past 45 years

Using the ERA5 reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the spatial and temporal distributions of wind waves, swells and mixed waves in the Southeast Pacific waters are analyzed for the period 1979—2023, as well as the long-term trend of the wave field usi...

description Using the ERA5 reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the spatial and temporal distributions of wind waves, swells and mixed waves in the Southeast Pacific waters are analyzed for the period 1979—2023, as well as the long-term trend of the wave field using the Theil-sen method. The results show that: the wind field in this area is dominated by the southeast trade winds, showing a gradually decreasing distribution from the mid-low latitude to the equatorial and mid-latitude areas; the mixed waves and swells are mainly affected by the remote swells of the Southeast Pacific Ocean, and the wind and waves are controlled by the local wind field; the wind field, mixed waves, swells, and wind waves in the dry season period are higher than that in the rainy season period; the wave period is dominated by the medium-long period; the joint distribution of the wave height period shows an upper bulge ellipsoid; the mixed waves, swells, and wind waves all last for a long time; and the wave field, mixed waves, swells, and wind waves all continue to change for a long time. waves, swell waves and wind waves all continue to show a general upward trend, with growth rates of 0.21 cm/a, 0.26 cm/a and 0.20 cm/a, respectively, with swell waves showing the most significant growth. It is expected that the sea state change rules in time and space obtained in this paper can provide reference for shipping, ocean engineering construction and ocean energy utilization in the Southeast Pacific Ocean.
