| Summary: | This paper is concerned with how Ireland was represented in the documentary film Man of Aran (Robert Flaherty, 1934). Much has been written about the film, and the controversies surrounding it have been at the centre of debates since its production. We will examine the conditions in which Flaherty’s film was produced. Considering its reception on its release and in its afterlife, we will question the opposition between fiction and documentary film. We will analyse the documentary’s formal construction and endeavour to understand why Irish scholars unanimously denounce the negative effects the film seems to have had on the perception of the Irish landscape. |
