| description | This article uses some bibliographical elements, a family memory, and the analysis of some carpet designs to complete the history of Guergour carpets. Guergour is a region of Algeria situated between Setif and Bejaïa/Bougie, in the Southern limits of Little Kabylia. During the years 1870-1930 approximately, there was in this zone a flourishing type of carpets unique in Algeria, which is a close imitation of those known as “Kis-Ghiordes” from Anatolia. Some aristocratic families played an important role in their creation and distribution. An analysis of the technical and aesthetic characteristics of some exemplaries (one of them was presented in Paris Exposition universelle in 1889) demonstrates that, despite of their “orientalism”, those carpets remain profoundly attached to certain tendencies of the native Algerian aesthetics. |
