Description
Summary:In Gottfried Keller’s novella cycle Das Sinngedicht, a naturalist and a cultivated lady argue about the right gender relationship and the foundations for a happy marriage. At issue is the patriarchal relationship based on inequality and dominance, which has generally been considered the ‘natural’ one since the 18th century. On the basis of the novella Regine, this paper explores on the one hand the imaginary dimension of female ‘nature’, which thus appears less ‘natural’ than culturally constructed, and on the other hand is devoted to the figure of the maid, raising the issue of service and self-sacrifice as defining a specific female destiny. In this case as well, the author locates this conception less in ‘nature’ than in social relations of dependency.
