Summary:Objective To investigate the expression of asparagine synthetase (ASNS) in colorectal cancer (CRC) and its association with the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients. Methods Paraffin-embedded tissue samples and clinicopathological data were collected from 143 patients with primary CRC who underwent surgical resection in our hospital from Ja-nuary 2017 to December 2018. Immunohistochemistry was used to measure the expression level of ASNS in CRC tissue and adjacent normal tissue, and the association of ASNS expression in CRC tissue with the clinicopathological features and prognosis of patients were analyzed. Results The expression level of ASNS in CRC tissue was significantly higher than that in adjacent normal tissue (χ2=28.078,P<0.05), and the expression level of ASNS in CRC tissue was significantly associated with TNM stage, lymph node metastasis, and vascular tumor thrombus (χ2=7.042-10.724,P<0.05). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve analysis showed that the patients with a high expression level of ASNS in CRC tumor tissue tended to have a shorter disease-free survival time (χ2=6.440,P<0.05), while the expression level of ASNS had no influence on the overall survival time of CRC patients (P>0.05). Conclusion ASNS is highly expressed in CRC tissue, and the expression level of ASNS might be associated with the poorer disease-free survival of patients. Therefore, it can be used as a potential biomarker for predicting the prognosis of CRC.
