Blood samples were taken from all children, and the sera were tested for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen, antibody to hepatitis B core antigen, and hepatitis B surface antigen using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay Results: Hepatitis B surface antigen and total antibody to hepatitis B core antigen were negative in all children involved in the study whereas antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen was positive (antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen ? 10 mIU/mL) in 256 (66.7%) and negative (antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen < 10 mIU/mL) in 128 (33.3%) children; (77.3%) of children in the age group 1-5 years were positive for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen, while the percentage was less (66.7%) in the age group 6-10 years and least (57.9%) in the age group 11-14 years, these differences in the age groups were statistically significant, p value <0.02. Conclusions: Universal Hepatitis B virus vaccination program provided protection to nearly two thirds of children in Sulaimani city, Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and seronegative antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen exists in different age groups of the vaccinated children.
