Description
Summary:Modern scientists portrayed the bow in Greek culture as the weapon of inferior warriors as opposed to swords and lances. Its presence in Greek archaic texts has been considered as the result of oriental influences. This “exogenous” way of considering the bow in Ancient Greece has been established on the basis of pictures on amphorae, historical, comical texts and tragedies, and had repercussions on linguistics: τόξον (tóxon), the most used word for “bow”, has been seen as a loan-word from the Scythian language. However, a different read-through of the Homeric and post-Homeric material shows that archers were not considered as inferior warriors in archaic Greece, but only in classical Greece. This change of perspective had consequences in linguistics as well: the word τόξον would then be vertically inherited from PIE instead of being loaned from a sister-language.
