description This article proposes to explore death in migration as a “social fact”. It draws on suggestions and findings of an ongoing fieldwork, started in 2015 in Italy, which uses qualitative research methods. The analysis lies on three different perspectives : grief and absence dimensions related to death in migration ; the management of deceased bodies ; and the political dimension of dead bodies. The fil rouge that links all the imagines mortis included in the article, through dialogs between alive and dead people, is represented by the look upon processes of social stratification, within which migrants’ deaths could unfold multifaceted aspects.
