description During the ventennio nero, Venice remained a tourist destination favoured by the French who continued to visit and admire its cultural and architectural wealth. The fascist regime, well aware of the economic importance and of the political interest attached to attracting a large number of visitors, promoted railway discounts and circulated appropriate documentation for tourists. However it also tried to transform the image of Venice to make it a modern city in order to integrate it into its programme of “national regeneration” while at the same time making the myth of Venice a national myth. Through their reports, travellers recounted these changes but their nostalgia for an unchanging city remained clear as did their view of the frequently ambiguous changes with reference to the ability of the regime to profoundly transform the city of the doges.
