Description
Summary:At the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the 15th century, El Puerto de Santa María became one of the most important seigneuries in Andalusia from an economic and commercial point of view, in the context of the economic development of Atlantic Andalusia. The Ducal House of Medinaceli took control of the alcabalas that taxed mercantile traffic at the end of the 15th century, making the collection of this revenue one of the bases of its economic power. Initially collected through a system of auction and rent leasing, the difficulties encountered by the lords of the Port in paying their debts and satisfying their creditors led them to decide to change the system of collecting the rents, abandoning the rent system for the most lucrative collection and adopting a system of direct collection through the faithful appointed by the seigniorial agents.
