Summary:Significant advances have been made in order to optimize drug delivery to ocular tissues. There has been considerable interest in the potential application of contact lenses for ocular drug delivery. Contact lenses are emerging as an alternative ophthalmic drug delivery system to resolve the shortcomings of the conventional topical application methods like eye drops and ointments. Contact lenses are desirable due to advantages in dosing regimen, bioavailability and prolonging the residence time of drugs and therefore, are ideal choice for ophthalmic drug delivery. Extended wear contact lenses that deliver drugs for extended periods could increase patient compliance. This review highlights the drug delivery through contact lens-based ophthalmic drug delivery systems with significanta potential to use in ocular therapeutics.
