Description
Summary:Head and body hair: these corporeal excrescences, which can be modified at no great risk, convey four types of information: on sexual statuses and differences between genders, as well as general differences established by societies; on ethnic, social and personal identities; on order and disorder, on the norm and the margin within a society; on the aesthetic trends in a given period. The author sketches the framework of a general ethno-trichology, and includes examples drawn from various cultural contexts. Symbolising belonging and ways of being, the treatment of hair on the head and body is a highly contentious subject (between generations, populations, and members of the same society who have opposing ideologies).
