| Summary: | In this study, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) technique was used to simultaneously optimize the yield and total phenolic content (TPC) of Lippia alba leaf extracts, evaluating the effect of ethanol concentration, extraction time and solvent-to-solid ratio with the aid of Box-Behnken design and response surface methodology. The L. alba extract obtained by UAE under the optimized condition (29% ethanol, 17.8 min and solvent-to-solid ratio of 71 mL g-1) resulted in a yield of 20.33% and TPC of 30.86 mg GAE g-1 dw. The extract obtained by UAE showed higher results of extraction yield, TPC, total flavonoid content (TFC) and antioxidant activities compared to the maceration and infusion extracts. Analysis performed by high-resolution mass spectrometry allowed the identification of several iridoids, phenolic acids, phenylpropanoids and flavonoids in the extracts of L. alba, which justified the antioxidant activities of its extracts, indicating that this species can be used as a source of economically important antioxidant compounds for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. |
