description The movements and social phenomena known as Set Setal (“clean-up” 1989) Bul Faale!” (“don’t mind!,” 1988) and Y’en a marre (“we’re fed up!,” 2011) marked the emergence of urban youth in the public space of Senegal. These phenomena, different in their nature as well as in their modes of operation and their goals, nonetheless, take place in a common background as part and parcel of a generational dynamics of assertion and emergence of a civic consciousness. This desire of the youth, to personally take charge of their destiny, is the driving force of these experiences, all of which bear witness to the power of mobilization of young people, their sense of initiative, their creativity, and their giftedness in transforming artistic occupations (music, painting) into awareness levers for resistance and struggle. These movements have undoubtedly something to do, as revealers and catalysts, with the two democratic power hand-changes experienced by Senegal. This work aims at putting into perspective these movements, by clarifying their origins, analyzing their specificities in view of highlighting some of their achievements thus to better examine their challenges, limitations and end results.
