Description
Summary:This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of roasted cashew nut supplement (RCN) on hypertensive penile dysfunction (HPD) in male Wistar rats on exposure to the mixture of petrol, kerosene and diesel (MPKD). Seventy rats (175 ± 25 g) randomly assigned into seven groups (n = 10) were exposed for 14 days and treated for 14 days after exposure. Group I was normal control, which was placed on basal diet. Group II was treated with MPKD (0.2 ml/day) and placed on basal diet. Group III was administered with MPKD (0.2 ml/day) + atenolol (50 mg/kg) and placed on basal diet. Group IV was administered with MPKD (0.2m/day) + RCN (10 %). Group V was administered with MPKD (0.2 ml/day) + RCN (20 %). Group VI was administered with RCN (10 %) while Group VII was administered with RCN (20 %). Exposure to oral MPKD triggered the development of HPD by increasing heart angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), penile malondialdehyde (MDA) level, aggregating the activities of arginase, and phosphodiesterase-51 (PDE-51) with corresponding bioavailability of inflammatory mediators, which are hallmarks of HPD. Remarkably, HPD was abrogated using RCN treatment by the decreased cholinergic (AChE and MAO) and ATP hydrolytic (ATPase, ADPase, AMPase and ADA) enzymes with increased NO level. Inflammatory mediators, hypertension, vascular congestion, infiltration of inflammatory cells and haemorrhagic lesion caused by MPKD exposure were lowered on treatment with RCN supplements (10 % and 20 %). This study therefore suggested that roasted cashew nut supplement is a better therapy for hypertensive patients with erectile failure.
