description This paper presents and explores the structural rehabilitation of a significant historical and monumental building, emphasizing the use of structural steel in architectural restoration and conservation. Over the past four decades, structural engineering has often underutilized steel, creating the need to showcase its potential in remodeling, retrofitting, strengthening, and preserving historical buildings. In fact, structural steel offers technologically advanced, minimally invasive solutions that balance structural safety, architectural preservation, and economic constraints. The paper begins by presenting, in broad terms, the full extent of the structural work and then focuses on the static strengthening of the masonry vertical load-bearing elements, for which it proposes a tailored structural solution directed at buildings with vulnerabilities to gravitational loads. The paper offers a detailed analysis of vertical masonry elements, addressing the issue of strength evaluation and stress analysis to predict their structural performance as well. One of the key novelties of this study is the introduction of a method for designing and structurally analyzing a rehabilitation work aimed at enhancing the load-bearing capacity of masonry columns and piers under gravitational loads. The discussion also emphasizes the often-overlooked limitations of material testing in accurately assessing masonry strength and delves into the critical impact of material and geometric nonlinearities on maximum stress levels – issues that remain underexplored in the existing literature.
