| description | Mass retail is a sector where economic performance tends to be measured by the volume of goods distributed – an indicator built upon human resource management policies that are largely rooted in the productivity of labour. Commercial companies are constantly seeking to move large numbers of staff members to the right place at the right time, a complicated exercise given customers’ irregular presence at points of sale. The way that companies use the working time that they have purchased therefore constitutes a key variable in controlling production costs. The solutions they choose will affect the temporal conditions determining employees’ in-store execution of tasks. Such activities tend to fluctuate between intensity and overflow. In turn, this strongly affects how staff members apprehend tasks; relations with customers; and their sense of serenity at work. |
