description Women’s museums are a relatively new concept. Founded in a specific sociocultural context, the first dating from the 1980s, and their numbers have continuously increased during the following decades. This article surveys the main women’s and/or gender museums at worldwide level and questions the link between museums and the history of women, and the new concept of gender museology. Consideration is also given to the main vectors, tasks and strategic outlines of this typology of museums and the main contents of their permanent exhibitions.
