Description
Summary:For more than a decade, one of the manifestations of Zofia Kulik’s ‘archival impulse’ has consisted in video documentations of the work towards arranging, digitising and preparing for display of the archival materials around the artistic activity of the KwieKulik duo. An outcome of these efforts is a three-episode video ‘miniseries’ ”Two Approaches to the Archive: the Never-Ending Series on KwieKulik”, edited in 2017. It depicts the collaboration between Zofia Kulik and Przemysław Kwiek on the KwieKulik Archive. My article analyses this ‘miniseries’ by interpreting it in the context of the history of the KwieKulik duo and Zofia Kulik’s current archivistic and artistic practice. I raise three issues: the difference between Kwiek’s and Kulik’s approaches, particularly with regard to the archive – both in the past and now – considered against the background of tense personal relations between former partners in life and art; the ‘Chinese box’ structure of the KwieKulik Archive, in which a single object may reveal an abundance of layers, references and archival links; the politics and economy of contemporary practices around the KwieKulik Archive.
