| Summary: | The Russian Federation is currently turning to innovation economy. Universities are important constituents of the innovation economy that influence the national socio-economic transformations. The article reviews scientific approaches to the role of faculty in this process, which sets new requirements for academic staff. A retrospective and prospective analysis revealed the current vectors of changes in the social role of a university professor caused by the economic shift, as well as made it possible to formulate the main criteria for these changes. The review of domestic publications also highlighted an urgent need for modernizing the current legislation and socio-economic planning. The articles that describe the requirements to faculty brought about by the new socio-economic processes made it possible to summarize the role of academic staff in the modern innovation-oriented economy and describe the League of University Professors in the context of innovative changes. The publications under review were compared with the author’s own criteria to define the impact of the innovation economy on the higher education and the new tasks that economy poses to faculty members. These vectors of change shape the figure of a modern university professor based on the needs of the Russian economy. The ongoing transition to innovation economy actualizes demands for an innovative development environment with higher education as a key stakeholder. |
