description This article proposes an analysis of how an emergent India has redefined its relations with the Maghreb, a region that is both geopolitically far from Indian concerns yet increasingly exposed to the Indian subcontinent’s economic dynamism. The article first looks at state to state political relations, showing how relations once structured around a pro-Arab policy of non-alignment have been recomposed on a pragmatic basis with priorities fixed by economic and Indian energy interests. The article suggests that India’s reaction to popular uprisings and regime change across the Maghreb is emblematic of his new diplomatic pragmatism. The article then shows how the acceleration of India’s economic growth over the past decade, has produced new trade flows with the Maghreb, and explores the economic strategies of the Indian government on the one hand and those of large private groups on the other, before analyzing the evolution of bilateral trade ties between India and individual countries in the Maghreb.
