description Since the 1980s, the River Nakambé has been a structuring element of Burkina Fas’s landscape, in particular in the region of the Mossi and Bissa people. This has however not always been the case. Indeed, this area long remained peripheral to the territorial organization in the Bissa region and was a synonym of health problems and insecurity. During colonial period, it was used as a refuge by the population. At the same time, impacts of and the relationship of the population with onchocerciasis evolved. Eventually, after the eradication of the disease and after the construction of the Bagré dam in the early 1990s, the Nakambé River became a key element of the development of Burkina Faso. The environment was once again altered. Amongst the consequences were the spread of certain diseases and a territorial reorganization, with regards to agriculture, economy and health issues. Health impacts can be considerable, but they are not always considered when natural or human environments are altered, It is therefore essential that they are given a central role in the decision making concerning territorial planning.
