| Summary: | The aim of this article is to compare Flaubert’s style with that of Houellebecq, using the scene of the agricultural fair (Comices agricoles) in Madame Bovary and that of the grandmother in hospital in Atomised (Les Particules élémentaires). The two faces of Flaubert’s style – the romantic penchant for the sublime, which never ceases to rub shoulders with the base and vulgar – will be contrasted with Houellebecq’s bipolarity, characterized by the coexistence of a penchant for the pathetic and a clinical gaze. |
