Gastro-intestinal (GI) parasitic infections are among the major constraints to ruminant production in Nigeria. Insidious productivity losses through reduced feed intake and decreased efficiency in feed utilization, associated with subclinical or chronic conditions of parasitic infections, are often the cause of large economic loss. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites of cattle in some selected abattoirs in Zaria and Sabon-Gari Local Government areas of Kaduna State. A total of fifty (50) faecal samples; 25 samples from each abattoir, were collected and examined microscopically for the presence of gastro-intestinal parasites of cattle. Nineteen (76%) out of the 25 samples collected at Zangon –shanu abattoir had gastrointestinal parasites, while16 (64%) of samples collected from Tudun-wada abattoir were positive with gastrointestinal parasites. The overall prevalence obtained in the study was 70%. 'This study revealed the presence of Strongyle, Trichuris spp, Paramphistomum spp, Fasciola spp, Coccidia spp and Monezia spp gastrointestinal parasites of cattle in the two abattoirs within the study area. Adoption of good management practices, periodical deworming and treatment with anthelminthic drugs, and public enlightenment on the zoonotic importance of helminth parasites is essential were recommended.
