| Summary: | The aim of this article is to present the legal structure of Montreal’s newspaper Le Devoir. Set up as a stock company under federal law, the firm has been subject to an unusual arrangement. It is particularly interesting to examine how the succeeding publishers and directors understood this unusual but clever arrangement over time. At times key actors did not seem to grasp clearly the full range of their powers. While the arrangement sometimes appeared shaky, if not illegal, the fact still remains that it provided Henri Bourassa’s successors the necessary means to resist external pressures, which was the primary aim of the arrangement. |
