Description
Summary:The Algerian Hirak is a protest movement characterized by the omnipresence and the intense use of written slogans on placards. These expressions charged with a violent tone are an important channel of communication between protesters and power structures. This qualitative research focuses on the study of verbal violence forms and its discursive strategies in six written Hirak slogans. We also explore its purposes. To achieve this, we opt for a three-levelled analysis: pragmatic, rhetorical and lexico-semantic. The analysis results have demonstrated that verbal violence is multiform. It is manifested in the form of condemnatory and threatening speech acts, forceful slogans and rhetorical strategies, including figures of speech, all conveying pejorative meanings. Its use is linked to selfaffirmation, identity (de)construction and influencing others.
