Summary: | How can we explain the fact that many people choose to shut their eyes to harassment in the workplace? To answer this question, the article draws on the accounts of workers who provide services to victims of harassment. The proposed analysis is based on a thematic analysis of the withdrawal strategies that can be observed among individuals affected by harassment, witnesses, immediate managers and union officers. Inspired by the psychodynamics of work, the analytical framework presented allows harassment to be examined as a symptom of a socio-organizational dynamic that gives precedence to economistic discourse and the instrumental dimension of work over any other human consideration. It also considers the subjects’ withdrawal strategies as responses to the fear produced by certain management practices and organizational standards that penetrate the work culture and communities of workers. |
