| Summary: | Contrary to the common belief that the “greenways concept” was introduced in early 19th century, there is ample historic evidence proving that it was employed throughout the history—albeit under a diversity of names and definitions. Such an inconsistency in definition has therefore led to different conceptions, expectations and goals both in planning and in design. This research aims to focus on the relatively overlooked social aspects of this concept; and address the popularity and community acceptance of some examples versus the rejection of others. To reach an exact definition, it therefore surveys historic documents, analyzes illustrative representations of greenway examples, and reviews scholarly discussions on the topic.
In conclusion, it highlights some of the social aspects accountable for the popularity and persistence of successful examples. It also explains the diversity of greenways concept and its evolution to its present day notions. The findings presented in this study can provide a basis for a change of perspective in planning these routes, while reusing some forgotten principles in contemporary practice. |
