Description
Summary:This study aims to outline the ways photography is used in the prose works of Annie Ernaux. Her text aptly titled L’Usage de la photo (2005), where, for the first time, the author’s work features the images themselves, not just the descriptions, serves as a key to the intepretation. The study starts from the assumption that in this self-reflexive book Ernaux employs the strategies and vocabulary of theoretical writing to conceive her own notion of photography and the subsequent method of writing. By focusing on the documentary, social, and contemplative function of these media, she refers to important themes of the theory of photography, which she recasts in a specific way by setting them within a literary framework.
