description When I wrote in SFS #50 of Wells’s fairly radical revisions of Moreau subsequent to the book’s original publication, he did not know that the text in which Wells inscribed them (a copy of the "Colonial Edition’’ of 1896) was the basis of a French translation by Henry-D. Davray. The date of Davray’s L’Ile du Docteur Moreau proves that Wells’s revamping of the book antedates 1900. To make the case stranger, Davray later averred that Wells intended his revisions to be incorporated in future English-language editions.
