| Summary: | This article examines how the characteristics of cinemas shape the experience of audiences in France, using the theoretical framework of the sociology of experience proposed by François Dubet. Using CNC’s database, we establish a typology of cinemas, helping to construct three figures of the public. First, the “customer” associates the commercial aspects with the federative dimension of the cinema going and is particularly noticeable in multiplexes with high-capacity rooms and strong presence of commercial devices. The second, called the “spectator”, can be found in small theaters, where the few number of screens requires a more generalist approach to programming, while at the same time developing the cinema as a place to enjoy films, through animated screenings or specific themes. Finally, the third category, called “users”, combines emancipation with integration through the organization of debates and the promotion of the aesthetic and political qualities of films, and mainly concerns the exhibitors most involved in “Art et Essai”. The study highlights the growing concentration of admissions in large establishments and the rise of the customer. |
