| description | The objective of this article is to establish a relational panorama between the Pantanal territory of Mato Grosso do Sul, the creative economy, and the productive sector of handicrafts. Enterprises of 51 artisans from 7 municipalities in the Pantanal region of South Mato Grosso were analyzed: Corumbá, Ladário, Miranda, Aquidauana, Anastácio, Dois Irmãos do Buriti, and Porto Murtinho. Through interviews, documentary collection, and ethnographic analysis, efforts were made to grasp the elements that characterize the artisanal production of the region and give meaning to the economic and social dynamics that are built from relationships within and with the Pantanal territory. The results show that the identities and cultures of the Pantanal people, the indigenous populations of Terena and Kadiwéu, as well as the traditional techniques of creating and conceiving the marketed artifacts, provide the creative, symbolic, and economic impetus of the analyzed region, preserving cultural exchange with the environment, although the function of the artifacts has changed, serving as a means of material exchange within the mercantile universe. Indeed, if the creative economy is the economy of the symbolic, it is also that of the territory; therefore, it is a territorially based creative economy capable of enhancing sustainable economic development. |
