description | There are limited studies assessing haemostatic factors in relation to birth weight. Our study aimed to assess the differences in values of coagulation factors between 3 groups of neonates with different birth weight.
A cross-sectional study enrolling 53 healthy neonates compared coagulation factors according to the birth weight for their gestational age. For this, PT, APTT, INR, TT, and levels of fibrinogen, anti thrombin III, protein S and protein C were compared between neonates divided into 3 different groups including small, appropriate, and large for gestational age.
There was statistically significant difference in levels of protein S (p<0.0001) and values of APTT (p=0.01) between 3 different groups. Other coagulation factors however, did not represent an explainable or significant pattern (p>0.05). Protein S concentration, directly (B: 0.76, PV<0.0001), and APTT, inversely (B: - 0.33, PV=0.01), associated with birth weight after adjusting for gestational age and sex .
Despite decreased APTT from SGA, to AGA, and LGA neonates, level of protein S increase directly with birth weight. However, no other coagulation factors revealed an explainable pattern in relation to either state of SGA, AGA, or LGA. |
