description Work and knowledge have many connections: education is no doubt useful for industrial development. But if one goes further into details, the relation between knowledge and development is far from being linear. More schools does not always mean more development. There might even be teachings that could get in the way of industrial growth. No specific knowledge per se guarantees success in the industrial world. To succeed, entrepreneurs have to do better than their competitors, not reproduce what the experts suppose to be the best way. That is to say that education cannot give the key to industrial success: it can only teach what experts know. This paper focuses on what knowledge is useful for industrial development. It will gather data on education and on jobs in the private factories of Guangdong in order to bring food for thought about the work/knowledge relation. Education both boosts and hinders industrial development. To understand the complexity of the relation, one must investigate individual cases.
