The article proposes a methodological reflection on collecting stories in social research, developed in a study about migrants’ deaths. The topic of death challenges the material based coherence of narratives, transposing the exploration inside the intertwined dimensions of silence and absence and questioning the potentially unusual perspective of “what is” of social
phenomena and, in this case, of migrations. The reflection is crossed by a question about the irreducible trait of the collected stories in the sense of their persistence as well as in the challenging character they always keep for the interpreters, in order to preserve their “light”.

L’articolo propone una riflessione metodologica sulla raccolta di storie nella ricerca sociale, a partire da uno studio sulla morte nell’emigrazione-immigrazione. La morte sfida l’evidenza materiale delle narrazioni muovendo l’esplorazione attraverso dimensioni di silenzio e assenza; interrogando il “ciò che è” dei fenomeni sociali e in questo caso delle migrazioni, da una
prospettiva potenzialmente inconsueta e rivelatrice. La riflessione è attraversata da una domanda sull’irriducibilità delle storie, sia nella loro persistenza ostinata sia nella sfida per chi racconta, a conservarne il bagliore.
