Description
Summary:In Jean Echenoz’s novels, in particular Life of Gérard Fulmard, chosen as exemplary corpus, various tensing of reported discourses — by their setting in competition, in collapse or in suspension — show a persistence of the configuration of mention-echo (I): new varieties of echoey mention in the representation of discourse take root on this system of bivocality. At the same time, the examination of the dialogical layering in the work reveals its numerous outgrowths outside the representation of discourse (II): echoey mention emerges at all levels, between the discourse of a character and an event in the fiction, between two narrative paths, between two enunciative strata. This particularly vivid process provides new varieties of fiction (III): if its parodic scope contributes to fallow certain genres of narrative, at the same time, the tensions between diegesis and textuality provide a new type of fiction - as if the echo-mention, by its stake in textual memory, was a way of grafting contemporary narratives onto genres that are now fallow.
